St. Columba

St Columba is famous for introducing Christianity to the Picts of the North Western part of Scotland and also
famous for his works in Iona developing the first monastic Christian settlement in Scotland. He was born in 521 in
County Donegal in Ireland. He was known as either Columba, Colm Cille or Columcille during his mission. He is
said to have come from the Ui Neill clan and started his mission works as a monk but this was ended in 560 when
he entered into a dispute with St Finnan which lead to the Battle of Cul Dreimhne in 561.

In 563 he traveled to Scotland and landed at Southend, near Campbeltown. He moved further north to Iona on the
West coast of Scotland. He was more than a missionary to the people of Iona. He was a peace-maker between
tribes. He visited many leading figures during this time to convert them to Christianity. Scotland at this time was a
pagan country. He visited Bridei king of the tribe of Fortriu, a pictish settlement around Moray and Easter Ross.
Columba is said to have had a positive effect on him and is thought to have been converted by Columba.

Columba was also an amazing statesman, playing roles in the politics of the 6th century Scotland. He founded the
abbey at Iona and this was his monument. Iona is also known as St. Columba's island, Columba also contributed
to the Book of Kells. Modern day Iona Abbey is on the site of the original Abbey, itself a breathtaking Christian
building, with the impressive St. Martin's cross which was built in the 9th century. There is also a replica of St
John's cross can be found in the doorway of the abbey. He wrote many books, letters and hymns, he was a real
man of letters. He stayed on Iona until he passed away in 597.

In the 7th century a book was written about Columba called "Vita Columbe" which gives so much information
about Columba's life. This document is the first to mention a King Arthur and a loch Ness monster. His feast day
is 9th June and is one of the patron saints of Ireland.
