Cardinal Thomas Winning

Cardinal Winning is an amazing Christian man, let me say that and foremost. He was the type of man that could
cross boundaries of denomination, class, colour and creed. He was born in 1925 in Lanarkshire. Winning was
schooled in Motherwell and went into the priesthood age 17 in Glasgow.

He then went to Rome in 1948, He gained a doctorate in 1953 and the returned back to Scotland. In Scotland he
held quite a few positions in and around the Hamilton/Motherwell area until 1961 when he was called back to Rome
to become the spiritual director of the Scots college. At this time Vatican II was happening in Rome . He returned
back to Scotland in 1966, where he finally took charge of his own parish in Motherwell.

In 1971 he was appointed to become a Bishop as Auxiliary Bishop to the Archbishop of Glasgow. In 1974 he
succeeded Archbishop Scanlan and himself became Archbishop. He is also the first Catholic Archbishop to have
ever addressed the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Winning did this twice. In 1994 he was elected to
be a cardinal by Pope John Paul II.

Winning was very vociferous about certain issues in modern morality. He was very outspoken against
homosexuality, abortion and the celibacy of priests. He helped to bring Pope John Paul II to the UK in 1982 and
rejected a plan to renovate St Andrews cathedral in Glasgow as be had better use for the money around the diocese.

He has been awarded honorary degrees at Aberdeen, Glasgow and Strathclyde universities. He died in 2001 of a
heart attack while in the midst of his mission. The loss of Cardinal Thomas Winning was felt by every
denomination in Scotland. Although he rose high in office he always remained a "man of the people".
