George Wishart
George Wishart was born in 1513 with his family hailing from the Montrose area in Angus. He graduated from the
University of Leuven in Belgium in 1531 and was a schoolmaster in Montrose, Angus until the Bishop of Brechin
accused him of heresy in 1538. He fled to England, Germany and Switzerland but returned to Scotland in 1543.
He began preaching again in the year of 1544. He went preaching the new protestant gospel all over the country
(accompanied by a young John Knox who is said to have been learning from him) This was the case until Wishart
was arrested by the Earl of Bothwell (acting on behalf of Cardinal Beaton) in December 1545.
From then he was first transferred to Edinburgh Castle and then was tried by Cardinal Beaton and John Lauder. He
was sentenced to death by burning at the stake in March 1546.
George Wishart is a man who literally died for his Christian faith. He is credited with translating the Helvetic
confession of faith into English. He is remembered by the Martyrs memorial at St Andrews.
